Several workers of the ruling BJP and opposition Congress clashed and threw chairs at each other during a Durga idol immersion procession in Jabalpur on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.

The clash took place between supporters of Congress MLA Lakhan Ghanghoria and former BJP Minister Anchal Sonkar in the Kaanchghar area.

Both the parties had set up different stages to perform Durga puja rituals. When one idol arrived at around 1.20 AM for immersion, the supporters of the two parties entered into a heated argument over some issue.

Soon after, the argument erupted into a violent clash. Members of both the groups thrashed each other, broke plastic chairs kept at the venue and damaged the stages too.

A heavy police force was rushed to the spot from four different police stations of Hanumantal, Belbagh, Gohalpur, and Ghamapur.

According to ASP Suryakant Sharma, the police received information about the clash and brought the situation under control.
