There are some deaths that leave us heartbroken. There are others that leave us bewildered. The recent death of my nephew, filmmaker Anik Dutta, left me feeling both.

According to preliminary investigation, Vijay, a local farmer, had called the two boys to his home on Wednesday morning, reportedly on the pretext of helping with garlic planting. Shortly after, an altercation is believed to have occurred, leading to a tragic chain of events. It is suspected that after this, Vijay ended the lives of the two boys and then his daughters. Following this, he reportedly locked himself and his wife inside their home and set it on fire.

The incident took place around 9:00 AM. Seeing the smoke and flames, villagers rushed to the house. Local residents alerted police and fire services, who quickly arrived at the scene. The fire brigade managed to bring the fire under control, and the police entered the house to discover the bodies.
When authorities entered the premises, they found the boys’ bodies inside the house, while the remains of Vijay, his wife, and daughters were found in a different part of the house. All six were declared dead at the scene.
Villagers told the police that Vijay had suffered the loss of a son two months ago, which had a significant emotional impact on him. His elder daughter, Kanchana Maurya, is married and lives in Mukheria village in the Bichhiya block.
A local, Jhhingur, shared that Vijay had come to his house earlier in the morning and had asked for his nephew’s help in the field. When the nephew didn’t go, Vijay later brought two children to sow garlic. He had lured them with the promise of Rs 10 per kilogram for planting garlic. Both the children fell for the deception. Villagers say the farmer’s cattle were also burned alive in the fire that engulfed his house. His tractor was also reduced to ashes.
Superintendent of Police and forensic teams were deployed to examine the scene. The bodies were sent for autopsy, and a formal investigation has been launched to determine the exact sequence of events and underlying causes.
