Himachal Pradesh is exploring collaboration with New Zealand in the horticulture sector to boost apple and pear cultivation.
A delegation led by New Zealand High Commissioner Patrick John Rata called on Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in Shimla on Tuesday to discuss avenues of partnership.
The Chief Minister said that both regions share many similarities, and cooperation could significantly enhance the income of fruit growers in Himachal. He stated that New Zealand’s advanced practices, technology transfer, and farmer training would help improve productivity, strengthen post-harvest management, and meet international quality standards, thereby raising the global competitiveness of Himachal’s produce.

New Zealand’s expertise in high-density plantations, orchard management, pest and disease control, storage, and marketing strategies could prove invaluable, he maintained, adding that such guidance would not only improve yield and quality but also strengthen the state’s horticulture-driven economy.
“The government of Himachal Pradesh is committed to enhancing the income of apple growers and has taken several initiatives in this direction over the past two and a half years. The introduction of the universal carton has already ensured better prices for horticulturists. With New Zealand’s support, we aim to adopt modern, sustainable, and climate-resilient practices, paving the way for a new era in apple and pear cultivation,” Sukhu stated.
Horticulture Minister Jagat Singh Negi also shared his suggestions during the meeting.
