In a major step to ease sewage disposal across several villages of the national capital, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) approved setting up of Domestic Sewage Treatment Plants (DSTPs) and laying of sewer network for new connections.

In a recent meeting, Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma had mentioned about the development plan while sharing various decisions of the board. These 15 DSTPs are going to benefit around 12 lakh people in the coming times.

Notably, the new sewer network to be laid under the initiative will improve the situation of 37 villages and 59 colonies under three assembly constituencies including Narela, Bawana and Mundka, where people had been facing problems for a very long time due to lack of such amenities.

The total capacity of these DTSPs will be 39 MGD, and the villages that will benefit from it include Tikri , Bajitpur Thakran, Bawana, Pooth Khurd, Kanjhahwla, Neelwal , Hiran Kudna, Sultanpur Dabas, and several others.

The estimated cost of these STPs and the sewer lines is approximately Rs 1,964 crore, officials said, adding that the total length of this sewer network is going to be around 784 km.

The STPs, sewer networks and the new connections will not only improve the overall sanitation across all the colonies and the villages of the Outer and North West Delhi but also reduce the pollution going into the Yamuna.

The villages and the colonies in their adjoining areas have faced a lot of difficulties due to improper drainage and lack of functional sewer lines, forcing people to stay in bad conditions, but now the development will certainly bring relief.

Recently, the government unveiled a new drainage master plan to combat the issue of water- logging and other problems faced by the people due to the old and disturbed drainage system in the city.

The plan divides Delhi into three basins that are Najafgarh, Trans Yamuna and Barapullah, and accordingly work will be done in these basins as per the study and observations to provide targeted solutions, incorporating modern technology.
