The Special POSCO Court in Kandhamal district has sentenced a 31-year-old man to life imprisonment under relevant sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offence Act, 2012 after finding him guilty of committing the rape of a 6-year-old girl in April last.

As per the guidelines framed by the Apex Court, a minor victim of rape is entitled to compensation from the State or District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) under the Victim Compensation Scheme, in accordance with Section 357A of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

A sizable portion of the compensation is required to be deposited in a Fixed Deposit (FD) account and is legally permissible to be withdrawn upon minor victim attaining majority.
The dastardly crime, which was committed on 16 April last in a village in Gochapada police station jurisdiction, had sparked public outrage in the area.
