The city’s infrastructure was severely impacted, with waterlogging on railway tracks near Sealdah disrupting train services on the main Bangaon and Hasnabad lines.

At least 10 people lost their lives due to electrocution, with several others injured. Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim appealed to people not to venture out of their homes, citing reports of deaths due to electrocution in several places.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee described the downpour as “unprecedented” and criticized the private power generation-cum-distribution utility Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) for lapses in maintaining the power grid. Banerjee directed CESC to provide assistance and jobs to the families of the victims.

The state government announced compensation for the families of the victims and assured support for those affected by the disaster. Congress workers are expected to play a crucial role in providing relief and rehabilitation support to those in need, as per Rahul Gandhi’s request.
