India’s Sarvesh Kushare capped off a historic campaign at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo by finishing sixth in the men’s high jump final on Tuesday, setting a new personal best in the process.
The 29-year-old cleared 2.28m on his third and final attempt, improving on his previous mark. However, to stay in medal contention he would have needed to surpass the national record of 2.29m and then clear 2.31m, a height he could not manage in three tries.

The gold medal went to reigning Olympic champion Hamish Kerr of New Zealand, who soared to 2.36m. South Korea’s Sanghyeok Woo claimed silver with 2.34m, while Jan Stefela of Czechia secured bronze with 2.31m.
Kushare had already made history in qualification, when his 2.25m clearance booked him a place in the final, making him the first Indian man ever to do so at a World Championships in high jump.
