Kannada filmmaker S Narayan, wife and son booked in dowry harassment case

The Bengaluru police have registered a dowry harassment case against Kannada filmmaker S Narayan, his wife Bhagyavathi, and their son Pavan.

According to the complaint filed at the Jnanabharathi Police Station, the case was lodged by Pavitra, who is married to Pavan.

The couple tied the knot in 2021. Pavitra claims that despite dowry being given during the wedding, her husband and in-laws allegedly demanded more money from her.

In her statement, Pavitra said that Pavan, who was unemployed, stayed home while she managed the household expenses. Later, he allegedly asked her to arrange money to set up a film training institute named ‘Kala Samrat Team Academy’.

To support him, Pavitra pledged her mother’s jewellery and handed over the money.

However, the academy soon shut down after running into heavy losses. Pavitra has also alleged that she later raised a loan of ₹10 lakh and gave it to her husband. Despite all this, she claims she was eventually thrown out of her matrimonial home.

The Bengaluru police have now filed an FIR under Section 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and under Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. The case is currently under investigation.

S Narayan is a popular name in the Kannada film industry. He began his career assisting senior filmmakers like HR Bharghava, Raj Kishore, and AT Raghu. Then he stepped into the spotlight with his debut film Chaitrada Premanjali (1992).

Following that, Narayan delivered family dramas including Anuragada Alegalu (1992), Megha Maale (1994), Thavarina Thottilu, and Bevu Bella.

In the 2000s, he became known for directing Kannada remakes of hit films such as Surya Vamsha, Simhadriya Simha, and Cheluvina Chittara.
