Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday visited the families of two children who lost their lives in the Munak Canal tragedy in Shalimar Bagh’s Haiderpur area to convey her condolences.

Assuring distraught families of the victims that her government stands in solidarity with them at this difficult hour, Gupta announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased children. She directed the concerned officials to immediately initiate the process of financial aid so that the compensation could reach the affected families at the earliest.

The chief minister also instructed the officials to undertake safety measures at canals and other sensitive locations to prevent such accidents in future. She said efforts are on to secure the area around the Munak Canal to avoid similar incidents elsewhere.

At present, the responsibility for the canal’s maintenance lies with the Haryana government, but the Delhi government is in discussion with the neighbouring state so that the maintenance responsibility could be transferred to Delhi. Once thet happens, railings will be installed on both sides of the Munak Canal to ensure public safety while allowing the canal to flow without obstruction, Gupta added.
