Stones were pelted at a Ganesha idol immersion procession in the Arif Nagar locality of Bhopal late at night on Monday, leading to communal tension, and prompting Hindu organizations to stage a protest and gherao of Gautam Nagar police station, demanding immediate action against those responsible.

Reacting to the incident, Hindu hardliner BJP MLA from Huzur constituency of Bhopal, Rameshwar Sharma, and MP Sports Minister Vishwas Sarang responded with scathing comments against the Muslim community on Tuesday.

“This is not a government of those who serve biryani. You do your namaz, but if you interfere in our festivities, then Lord Hanuman’s mace will come down so heavily upon you that no one would be able to stop it,” Rameshwar Sharma averred.

Echoing similar sentiments, Vishwas Sarang said, “Strict action has been taken against such elements, and an FIR has been lodged. An example would be set so that no one dares to repeat such an act or tries to disrupt Hindu traditions and festivals in the future”.

The stone-pelting incident occurred at around 9:30 pm, when the procession was passing through the Arif Nagar locality. Immediately after that, the Hindu organizations stopped the procession and staged a protest and dharna on the road.

The police registered an FIR and began an investigation into the matter. After that, the procession proceeded ahead under heavy police security to prevent any further untoward incident.
