Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday urged the Central government to provide immediate assistance to states affected by devastating floods and landslides in North India. Expressing his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones, Kharge emphasised the need for swift action to alleviate the suffering of over 2.5 lakh people in Punjab alone.
“More than 2.5 lakh people are reeling under the devastating floods in Punjab. Several people have lost their lives. My heartfelt condolences to the families who have suffered losses,” Kharge said, adding that “there should be no politicking in the wake of natural disasters and PM CARES funds must be utilised to ensure adequate compensation to the distressed people in all the flood-affected regions.”

Kharge demanded a dedicated financial package for flood-affected states, including Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Haryana. He emphasised that the Central government and state authorities should work together to provide relief, rehabilitation, and prompt medical assistance to those affected.
The recent floods and landslides in North India have resulted in significant loss of life and property. In Punjab, several districts have been affected, with crops damaged across 3 lakh acres of farmland. In Jammu and Kashmir, the pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi shrine remained suspended for the seventh consecutive day after a landslide on a yatra route claimed 34 lives. The situation remains grim, with many areas still under threat from overflowing rivers.
