India-UK trade agreement to enter into force from July 15; ‘historic milestone,’ says PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the agreement is a "historic milestone" for India-UK relations and will boost bilateral trade and investment.
The PM said that the power of 21st century has been condensed into a small chip.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that the confluence of semiconductor experts from around 40-50 countries at Semicon India 2025 summit sends a powerful message that the world believes in India and is ready to build the semiconductor future with the country.
Speaking at the Semicon India 2025 summit at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi said “Today here, experts connected to semiconductors from around the world are present, there is representation from more than 40-50 countries, and India’s innovation and youth power are also visible here….this combination has only one message that the world trusts India, the world believes in India, and the world is ready to build the semiconductor future with India.”

“As you all know, I am quite passionate about technology. Recently, during my trip to Japan, I had the opportunity to visit the Tokyo Electron factory along with Japan’s Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba-san. My deep connection with technology keeps bringing me back to you again and again,” he said.
The PM said that while the previous century was determined by oil, the power of 21st century has been condensed into a small chip.
“It is said that oil was the black gold, but chips are the digital diamonds. Oil shaped the last century, but in the 21st century, power lies within these tiny chips. They hold the potential to accelerate global progress,” he stated.
The prime minister said that a semiconductor chip may be small but it has the power to accelerate the progress of the world at great speed.
Noting that the global semiconductor market is projected to cross USD 1 trillion in the coming years, Modi said India will secure a significant share in this.
“I firmly believe that, with the speed at which Bharat is advancing in the semiconductor sector, our nation will secure a significant share of this trillion-dollar market,” he said.
Modi highlighted the rapid progress of India’s semiconductor sector over the past few years.
“In 2021, we launched the Semicon India program. By 2023, India’s first semiconductor plant was approved. In 2024, we approved some more plants. In 2025, we cleared 5 more projects. Overall, an investment of USD 80 billion, that is more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore, is taking place in 10 semiconductor projects,” he added.
Prime Minister Modi has been laying strong emphasis on the growth of semiconductor industry in India and making the country a hub for manufacturing chips. Last month, he announced that India’s first indigenously manufactured chip will hit the markets by the end of this year.
