It was the fairytale announcement the internet couldn’t stop talking about. Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce are officially engaged. But just as fans were celebrating the dreamy garden proposal, Kelce’s ex-girlfriend Kayla Nicole dropped a post that had many raising their eyebrows.
Hours after the engagement photos hit Instagram on Tuesday, Nicole reshared a clip of actress Tracee Ellis Ross talking about the difference between happiness and joy.

“I think joy is different from happiness. Happiness is something you can get at 7-Eleven, and joy is something that you earn and work for and takes practice,” Ross said in the video. “I think joy is an attitude. I think joy is a perspective, and I think joy is a lens through which I live and look at my life.”

Nicole added her own caption: “Read about this very concept years ago in a book called ‘Choose Joy: Because Happiness Isn’t Enough.’ I aspire! So so good.”
The timing was impossible to ignore. Nicole dated Kelce for five years in an on-and-off relationship before the pair split in 2022. Since then, she has often found herself caught in the middle of online chatter, especially after Kelce’s romance with Swift became one of the most talked-about celebrity relationships of the last two years.

Swift and Kelce went Instagram official with their engagement by posting a series of dreamy photos in a flower-filled garden. The pop superstar wrote a playful caption: “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”

Kayla Nicole, meanwhile, has spoken before about the challenges of being dragged into Kelce’s love life drama. Last year, she candidly addressed the hate she sometimes receives on social media.
Still, she has also made it clear that her split from Kelce was not the messy financial drama people speculated about online.
On Angel Reese’s ‘Unapologetically Angel’ podcast, Nicole firmly denied a rumor that she and Kelce broke up because he wanted to split bills. “Do I look like I would go 50/50 on bills?” she said, laughing. Reese quickly backed her up with a “No.” Nicole added, “OK. So yeah, that was ridiculous. But he addressed that, too, though. I don’t even know why that became a thing.”
Kelce himself also set the record straight about the “cheap” rumors in 2023 while appearing on ‘The Pivot Podcast.’
“Don’t buy into that shit, don’t buy into that shit,” he told the hosts, dismissing the gossip.
Swift and Kelce have been linked since late 2023. They first sparked dating rumors after the singer was spotted cheering him on at a Chiefs game. Since then, they’ve become one of Hollywood’s most high-profile couples.
