India and Bangladesh have agreed to undertake joint efforts to bring down the number of incidents of border crimes by intensifying public awareness programs, undertaking appropriate socio-economic developmental programs in vulnerable areas, and educating the border population about the sanctity of the International Border (IB) and preventing criminals and inhabitants from crossing the border, the BSF said.

The border guarding forces, including India’s Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) held the Director General level coordination conference between August 25- 28 at the BGB headquarters Pilkhana, Dhaka, where a series of discussions were held.

The Indian delegation was headed by DG BSF, Daljit Singh and the Bangladesh delegation led by Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, DG, BGB.

Major agenda points from BSF were prevention against attack, assault, abuse, stone pelting on force personnel and Indian nationals by Bangladesh based criminals, or miscreants, joint efforts to prevent trans-border crimes, action against Indian Insurgent Groups (IIGs), denial and delay in taking over apprehended illegal Bangladesh entrants by the BGB, implementation of Coordinated Border Management Plan (CBMP), Confidence Building Measures (CBM) air violations (including drone intrusion), incorrect reporting/ misinterpretation of border issues by Bangladeshi media and other miscellaneous activities.

BGB agendas were prevention of trans-border crimes, border violation, alleged illegal crossing into the country territory by police, Indian nationals, smugglers and miscreants, killing at border, issues related to border infrastructure within 150 yards of IB, establishment of Effluent Treatment plant (ETP) for all 4 canals carrying waste water from Agartala to Akhaura, border demarcation, survey and construction and others.

Both the sides have agreed to take effective steps to continue to sensitize the border populace to refrain from violation of the IB, including Illegal crossing, intrusion and activities like smuggling, human trafficking, and other trans-border crimes.

They highlighted the importance of Coordinated Border Management Plan (CBMP) in curbing the menace of smuggling contrabands, such as, various narcotics (especially YABA), Firearms, FICN, gold etc.

BSF stressed upon the agenda for early construction of a Single Row Fence (SRF), which will be an important measure for curbing and preventing trans-border crimes, to which both sides agreed to follow the laid down procedure.

The frontier forces mutually agreed to constructively engage their higher authorities for concurrence of the pending developmental work within 150 yards of the IB.

Both sides also agreed to facilitate river bank protection works along the common bordering rivers as approved by the Joint River Commission.

These decisions were taken by the DGs after detailed discussions on the agenda from both sides with a view to maintain the highest level of cordial relation between the bordering countries as envisaged by current top leadership.

They provisionally agreed to hold the next DG level conference in New Delhi, at a suitable time in the month of March 2026.
