Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday paid a heartfelt tribute to Mahatma Ayyankali on the occasion of his Jayanti, remembering him as an enduring icon of social justice and empowerment.
He highlighted Mahatma Ayyankali’s unwavering commitment to education and equality, noting that his legacy continues to inspire the nation’s collective journey toward inclusive progress.

In a post shared on handle X, PM Modi wrote: “Tributes to Mahatma Ayyankali on his Jayanti. He is remembered as an icon of social justice and empowerment. He was also deeply passionate about knowledge and learning. His efforts will continue motivating generations to work towards a just and equitable society.”
Mahatma Ayyankali was a great Indian social reformer from the princely state of Travancore who fought for the social and economic progress of Dalits and oppressed people. He founded the Sadhu Jana Paripalana Sangham and fought for fundamental rights such as the right to education, right to walk on public roads, and right for women to wear respectable clothing, which brought about significant changes in the social and political structure of Kerala.
His major works and achievements include struggle against caste discrimination, fight to get Dalit children admitted to schools and get education. He also led the “Valluvandi Samaram” (Bullock Cart Movement) to give Dalits the right to walk on public roads. He also campaigned against social evils like women’s right to cover their breasts, so that their dignity is maintained in the society.
