AICC state in-charge Kumari Selja on Wednesday asserted that the Congress will return to power in Uttarakhand in the 2027 assembly elections, claiming that the mandate in the recently held rural body polls was against the BJP but the ruling party “misused power and money” to gain control.

Speaking at a press conference in Dehradun, Selja said the outcome of the three-tier panchayat elections reflected the people’s growing desire for change.

“The people of Uttarakhand are disenchanted with the BJP. They expressed their wish for change, which was evident from the results of the panchayat polls. However, violence unleashed by the ruling party was aimed at terrorizing elected representatives of district panchayats,” she alleged.

Accusing the BJP of “subverting the democratic process,” Selja added that its actions have given Congress the opportunity to be more vigilant in future contests. She also informed that the party’s organization would be strengthened at the district, block, and booth levels in the coming days.

Discussing her organizational meeting with state leaders, Selja said it was part of the Congress’s nationwide revamp programme ‘Sangathan Srijan.’ The initiative, she said, has already been implemented successfully in several states and will soon be launched in Uttarakhand.

According to Selja, the Congress central leadership will appoint observers under the programme in September.

“One observer will be assigned to each district, along with three observers from the Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee. They will spend ten days in every district, interacting with people and organisations. They will also discuss potential candidates with party workers and leaders, before submitting reports to the AICC,” she said.

She further stated that District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents will be appointed on the basis of observers’ reports and deliberations. Selja emphasized that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge want fresh faces to be inducted into the organization to energize the party.
