With the steep 50 per cent American tariffs on Indian goods exports kicking in from Wednesday, Samajwadi Party (SP) national president Akhilesh Yadav has demanded that the government provide a special relief and protection shield to save the products coming under one district, one product (ODOP).

Addressing exporters on social media today, the SP leader said that if the government does not provide help, the business of lakhs of exporters will come to a standstill and crores of people will become unemployed.

He said that this will make the problem of unemployment in the state even more severe. He said, ”If the government does not provide help and protection to the industries of the state in this difficult time, then what is the meaning of having a government.”

Further, he wrote, “We all know that the exports of Uttar Pradesh have been badly affected due to the tariff. The retaliatory tariff is the result of the unsuccessful policies of the BJP government. Why should the exporters and the other businesses dependent on them — such as packing and transport industries and the workers-artists-craftsmen and their families — suffer the consequences of this.”

He pointed out that Banarasi sarees, the carpet industry, the brass industry, the lock and hardware industry, the leather industry, the perfume industry, the sports industry, food and processed products, the stone-marble industry, readymade garments, moonj, zari zardozi, home furnishings, bamboo, goldsmithery, bindi, wood products, shajar stone crafts, ceramics, wooden toys, ghungroo-ghanti, iron fabrication, the glass industry, and jute wall hangings worth billions of rupees are stuck in ships in the middle of the sea.

The list includes engineering products, terracotta, asafoetida, handmade paper, soft toys, banana fibre, aluminum utensils, chikankari, furniture, gaura stone craft products, tarakshi, metal craft items, flutes, handloom, and handicrafts.

“The exporters of Uttar Pradesh are standing on the verge of destruction. At the same time, the payment cycle of exports has gone haywire. The suppliers and vendors of the exporters are also worried,” he averred.

Yadav has told the exporters that this was the time to forget all differences and unite and put forward their demands strongly and get them accepted by the BJP government, which, he claimed, extorts donations by putting pressure on every small thing.

The SP leader, citing his support for the exporters, said that this is a matter of the livelihood of lakhs of families. “Along with this, it is also a question of the future of industry, business, and investment in UP. The government has many such measures through which it can help to save the exporters of the state from the ill effects of this terrifying tariff emergency,” he opined in his post.
