Heavy rains continued in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, with the situation in Jammu particularly becoming serious due to flooding in several areas. A flood alert was sounded in the Jammu city as waters rose in the Tawi river due to heavy rainfall in the region.

In an unfortunate incident, at leat five people were killed and 10-11 others were injured after a landslide occurred near Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkwari on Vaishno Devi route.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board said rescue operations were underway near Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkwari where the landslide took place. The injured have been admitted to CSC Katra.

The Vaishno Devi Yatra has been suspended in view of the landslide and adverse weather conditions due to heavy rainfall, and pilgrims have been stopped from proceeding further on the yatra route.

Amit Shah expresses grief over landslide deaths, speaks to CM Omar Abdullah 

Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his grief over the loss lives, terming the landslides in Vaishno Devi “deeply tragic”. Shah also spoke to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to take stock of the situation.

“The landslide caused by heavy rainfall on the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route in Jammu and Kashmir is deeply tragic. I have spoken with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Shri Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha regarding the incident. The local administration is actively engaged in relief and rescue operations, and an NDRF team is also reaching the site to assist the injured,” the Home Minister said on X.

At least four people are reported to have also died in heavy downpour in J&K’s Doda district. Two people were killed in a house collapse incident, while the other two died in flash floods triggered by continuous rainfall in the district.

Further, call and mobile internet services have been hit across all service providers in Jammu and Kashmir as heavy rainfall caused damage to optical fibres at multiple places, officials said.

Earlier in the day, Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah called a high-level meeting to review the flood situation in the Union Territory, especially Jammu, in view of the incessant rains. The CM has instructed officers to stay on high alert and undertake all necessary measures to protect life and property.

Schools have been closed in the Jammu region till tomorrow in view of the prevailing flood situation. Adverse weather conditions in the Jammu region have also led to the suspension of the recruitment drive slated for today for the post of constables in various security agencies.

Clear weather in Jammu tomorrow

However, in a partial relief, the weather department has predicted clear weather for the next few days.

Mukhtar Ahmad, Director in charge of the Meteorological Department (MeT), Srinagar, said that the weather will mostly remain clear in Jammu from Wednesday until Saturday. However, Jammu might witness moderate to heavy rainfall thereafter. But no rain is forecast for the Kashmir Valley until September 5, Ahmad said.

“There is a chance of water level rising in the lower and middle parts of the Jhelum till today evening due to continuous rainfall. After that, the water level in the river will start coming down. Due to rain since last week in the Jammu region, the water level has risen in rivers and nallas. People staying near low-lying areas must remain safe and alert. The next 24 hours in J&K are crucial,” he stated further.

Several areas in Jammu flooded

In Jammu, flooding has been reported from several areas, including Gadigarh and Gandhi Nagar. Water in these areas has entered houses and disrupted normal life. Army personnel carried out rescue operations and evacuated several people stranded in their houses in Gadigarh.

Jammu DIG Shiv Kumar Sharma was quoted as saying, “A flood alert has been sounded. The administration has appealed to the public to avoid going near rivers and nallahs. The traffic is operating on the highway. We are taking all measures to ensure the safety of the people.”

SP City, South Jammu, Ajay Sharma separately stated, “A rescue operation has been launched. We have requested the Indian Army also (to join in)…DM, SSP and the entire administration are also here…We appeal to the people not to be a hindrance in rescue operations…People have parked their vehicles on the roads due to that rescue teams are unable to reach the spots. There is no need to panic…Do not venture out near water bodies.”

It was also reported that the CRPF 121 Batallion office in Kathua, located near the banks of Ravi River, sustained damage after the raging river breached the banks in Lakhanpur area. The river was in spate after all gates of the Ranjit Sagar Dam were opened as the water level increased due to heavy rainfall.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh earlier posted on X, “Just Now Spoke to DC Doda Sh Harvinder Singh. According to him, a flash flood has been reported in the Charwa area of Bhalesa. So far, no casualty linked to this flash flood has been reported. The situation is being monitored by the administration, and regular updates being conveyed to my office (sic).”

In Kishtwar, the Mughal Maidan bridge is reported to have collapsed due to heavy rainfall in the region.
