Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation scraps dilapidated, polluting vehicles from road

In a move to streamline its operations and promote environmental sustainability, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated a rational discarding process for its old and dilapidated vehicles, an official said on Sunday.

The dismantling of old and unfit vehicles are being done under the Vehicle Scrappage Policy 2021. A total of 28 vehicles, including tippers, excavators, loaders, ambulances, and tractors, have been identified for disposal.

These vehicles have either completed more than 15 years’ life span from the date of registration or covered over 2,50,000 kilometers, rendering them non-roadworthy. The BMC has followed government norms in selecting these vehicles for scrapping.

The vehicles are being handed over to registered vehicle scrapping facilities in a phased manner, following due consultation with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) Bhubaneswar. This initiative is expected to promote recycling of materials, reduce waste, and recover valuable space occupied by these vehicles.

“The corporation aims to recover materials from abandoned vehicles in a professional manner, enabling the efficient use of valuable land. While BMC is managing material recovery facilities (MRFs) for daily waste from the city, we have thought of the abandoned vehicles in the same manner and the materials attached to such vehicles need to be recovered in a professional manner by the registered agency”, said BMC Commissioner, Chanchal Rana.
