Divorces don’t just break a couple apart, they sometimes ripple through entire families. For Dhanashree Verma, her separation from Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal was not only a personal storm but also a test for her parents.

In a conversation with ‘Humans of Bombay’, the dancer and choreographer revealed how the split left her parents struggling in ways she had never imagined. While she tried to remain calm amid social media trolling and gossip, it was her parents who bore the heavier weight of society’s judgment.

“I had to stay strong to make my parents feel better,” Dhanashree said, reflecting on those tough days. “We are from this generation, so we know not to take online negativity seriously. But how do you explain that to your parents when their friends keep calling, asking, ‘Yeh kya ho gaya?’”

The situation at home was intense. She shared that her mother often broke down in tears, and at times her parents avoided picking up phone calls altogether just to escape endless questions. Relatives and acquaintances wanted details, making things even harder. “Parents already live under so much pressure from society. And when something like this happens, it becomes too much for them,” she said.

Dhanashree admitted that walking away from the marriage was one of the hardest decisions of her life. It meant going up against not only personal emotions but also public perception, especially since her ex-husband is a high-profile cricketer with immense popularity.

“To even take that decision requires courage,” she explained. “When you’re with someone who is more powerful, it’s not easy to step away. But my parents reminded me every day that I had done the right thing. They told me they were proud of me.”
