Leader of Opposition in Madhya Pradesh, Umang Singhar on Tuesday alleged that nearly 16 lakh voters were fraudulently added in the state in just two months before the 2023 assembly polls, which resulted in the Congress candidates losing by very small margins on at least 27 of the 230 seats.

Addressing the media here, he charged that the BJP formed the government in the state in 2023 by ‘stealing’ votes and got a ‘fake’ mandate with the Election Commission’s help.

Singhar pointed out that in the 2018 Assembly polls, the BJP’s total votes were only one percent higher than the Congress votes. He questioned how this difference rose to almost 9 percent in the 2023 Assembly elections? He said that this happened because votes were manipulated.

Displaying a list of the 27 seats where Congress candidates lost by small margins in the 2023 Assembly polls, Singhar claimed that the number of voters on all those seats had been increased in thousands in just the two months before the voting took place.

In the constituencies of Shajapur, Dharampuri, and Mandhata, the Congress candidates lost by margins of merely 28, 356, and 589 votes, respectively. On several other seats, the BJP’s win margins were only between 1,000 and 3,000 votes, Singhar stated.

The voting in 2023 was held on November 17, and the final results were announced on December 3.

Of the 230 Assembly seats, the BJP won 163 seats, while the Congress won 66 seats. The increase in the number of seats of the BJP was 54, while the Congress number was reduced by 48 seats than the polls in 2018, when it had won 114 seats and the BJP had won 109.

The Congress had formed the state government in 2018, but it fell in 2020.

The BJP’s vote percentage in 2023 was 48.55 percent, while the Congress got 40.40 per cent votes. The difference was more than eight per cent.
