The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), taking suo motu cognizance of an incident of alleged corporal punishment meted out by a teacher to a Class 3 student at a government-run primary school in Gautam Budh Nagar district, UP, served a notice to the state government on Monday.

The incident reportedly resulted in a fractured shoulder, requiring surgical intervention.

According to a media report published on August 7, 2025, the young boy initially did not disclose the cause of his injury, but his reluctance to attend school for several days raised concerns. It was only after his younger brother revealed that the injury was caused by a teacher’s beating with a stick that the matter came to light.

The child’s parents subsequently admitted him to a hospital, where a surgery was scheduled for the serious shoulder injury.

Terming the report a serious issue of potential violation of human rights, the NHRC issued notices to the Principal Secretary of the Department of Basic Education, Uttar Pradesh, and the District Police Commissioner of Gautam Budh Nagar, seeking a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.

The Commission emphasized that, if true, the contents of the report reflect a grave failure in the protection of children within educational institutions and raise critical concerns regarding accountability and enforcement of child protection norms in schools.
