In a remarkable show of public adoption, Uttar Pradesh has registered nearly 30,000 activations of the newly launched FastTag Annual Pass within just two days of its rollout, according to data released by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

The overwhelming response has already translated into over 21,000 toll crossings across the state, reflecting strong early acceptance of the system, which promises seamless highway travel for frequent commuters.

A regional breakdown highlights distinct usage patterns, with western Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow zone) emerging as the frontrunner, recording 18,136 transactions. In contrast, the eastern part of the state (Varanasi zone) reported 3,106 transactions during the same period.

Transportation experts suggest this disparity reflects differences in travel patterns and highway usage frequencies across various regions of India’s most populous state.

A senior NHAI official clarified here on Monday that while the activation numbers reflect vehicles registered for the annual pass, toll usage is expected to grow significantly in the coming weeks. “Many new pass holders haven’t yet embarked on their highway journeys,” the official noted, adding that the scheme’s true impact will become clearer once regular commuters begin using their passes for daily travel.

Vishal Chauhan, NHAI Member (Administration) and senior IAS officer, expressed satisfaction with the public response. “The numbers have been phenomenal,” Chauhan said. “Uttar Pradesh’s contribution of 30,000 activations in just two days demonstrates the scheme’s immediate popularity among road users.”

National figures are even more impressive, with subscriptions crossing 1.4 lakh on the very first day (August 15) and swelling beyond 4 lakhs by August 17.

This surge has facilitated more than 4.25 lakh toll-free crossings across India’s vast national highway network, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital transportation infrastructure.

Priced at an affordable Rs 3,000, the annual pass offers substantial savings for frequent highway users who previously paid toll charges on every trip. The pass can be activated on existing FastTags through the user-friendly RajMarg mobile app.

Introduced on Independence Day following amendments to the National Highway Fee Rules, the scheme provides unlimited toll access for a full year, eliminating repeated payments and easing congestion at toll plazas.

Transportation analysts predict the scheme’s popularity will continue to grow as commuters recognize its economic benefits and convenience. With the festive season approaching and peak travel periods ahead, authorities expect activation numbers to rise further in the coming weeks, potentially transforming India’s highway travel experience.
