Akhilesh Yadav dissolves Samajwadi Party’s Jammu & Kashmir unit after poll debacle

Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday announced the dissolution of the party’s Jammu & Kashmir unit with immediate effect.

According to party sources, a new unit will be constituted soon.

The announcement was made through a statement issued under the signature of the SP national president. Party leaders said the decision followed the party’s poor performance in the recently concluded Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir, where speculation had already been rife that Akhilesh Yadav might take strict action.

The Samajwadi Party faced a major setback in the polls. Despite efforts to expand the party’s footprint beyond Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav had fielded candidates on 20 seats—five in Jammu and 15 in Kashmir—but the party failed to secure even a single seat.

This electoral outcome was seen as a serious blow to the SP, which had performed strongly in Uttar Pradesh during the Lok Sabha elections.

The constituencies where the SP had fielded candidates included Baramulla, Bandipora, Wagoora Kreeri, Karnah, Pattan, Kupwara, Gulmarg, Rafiabad, Trehgam, Lolab, Vijaypur, Udhampur West, Chenani, Nagrota, Hazratbal, Budgam, Beerwah, Habbakadal, and Idgah.
