Refuting all claims made by Ravichandran Ashwin on the signing of South African Dewald Brevis as an injury replacement in the middle of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday clarified that the process was well within the norms and regulations of the tournament.

CSK’s statement came after Ashwin recently claimed on his YouTube channel that Brevis’ signing at the Chennai-based franchise was done after they agreed to pay extra. Ashwin alleged that Brevis initially wanted more than the franchise’s offer, but the latter eventually agreed to meet his demands.

Brevis initially went unsold in the mega auction. However, CSK eventually brought him on board as the injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh. The 22-year-old, who entered the mega auction with a base price of INR 75 lakh, eventually received INR 2.20 crore from the franchise.

In their statement, CSK stated that all the rules and regulations were followed when Brevis was signed as a replacement player.

“Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL,” the franchise stated.

During the IPL 2025 mega auction held at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Gurjapneet Singh was originally signed by CSK for INR 2.20 crore. The franchise claimed that the process of acquiring Brevis, was according to the rule book which states that a franchise can’t go beyond the price tag for the replacement player what would have been payable to the injured cricketer.

“Dewald Brevis was signed in full accordance with the IPL Player Regulations 2025-27, specifically clause 6.6 under ‘Replacement Players’ which states: ‘A replacement Player signed pursuant to either paragraph 6.1 or 6.2 can be recruited at a League Fee which shall not be more than the League Fee that would have been payable to the injured/unavailable Player for the relevant Season.

“If a Replacement Player is recruited during a Season, the League Fee actually paid to him will be reduced to take account of the Franchisee’s matches during the relevant Season which took place before he was registered and any other relevant deductions under the Player Contract,” the release further added.

Earlier, Ashwin stated that several teams wanted Brevis but couldn’t afford to shell out the amount, the South African was asking.

“Dewald Brevis had a great time in the IPL last year after CSK got him in the back half of the season. I even heard that two-three teams were also talking to him but they had to let him go after not being able to pay extra money,” Ashwin had stated on his YT channel.

“He had a base price in the auction but discussions and negotiations would have happened with his agent, that ‘I’ll join the team only for a certain sum of money,’” Ashwin had said. “His concept would have been that ‘If I play this season, my value (for the next auction) will go higher’. So he might have told CSK, ‘I’ll need the extra money’. And the team was willing to pay him extra, which is why he came in,” added Ashwin.

Coming in the middle of IPL 2025, Brevis featured in six matches for CSK, scoring 225 runs at a strike rate of around 180 with two fifty-plus scores. His fifties came against Gujarat Titans (57) and Kolkata Knight Riders (52). Earlier, with Mumbai Indians, Brevis played 10 IPL matches.
