After the Supreme Court’s directions, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday announced that her government will formulate a policy to tackle the stray dog menace and address the issue in a “planned and systematic” manner.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, CM Gupta said, “People of Delhi are fed up with stray dogs. We have been discussing this issue for a long time. The Supreme Court’s directions are important. We want to provide relief to the people. The problem has assumed gigantic proportions. We will frame a policy and ensure effective action.”

Gupta further added that her government will handle the matter in a way that ensures both compliance with the Supreme Court’s orders and public safety.
Her statement came after the Supreme Court ordered civic authorities in Delhi-NCR to capture stray dogs, sterilise them, and place them in shelters.
The court directed the civic bodies to establish dog shelters and report on the creation of the required infrastructure within eight weeks.
According to the court’s order, the shelters must have adequate personnel for the care of sterilized dogs, which would be detained there and not released into public areas.
The apex court also warned dog lovers and animal rights organisations of strict action if they obstruct the authorities in capturing stray dogs.
“Action should be taken within four hours of receiving a complaint to capture the dog, and any individual or organization obstructing this process will face stern action. The captured dog will be sterilized and shall not be released,” the court said.
