Dr Harminder Singh Dua, a renowned ophthalmologist and Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, recently visited the Army Hospital (Research & Referral) [AHRR] in New Delhi.

Dr Dua is celebrated worldwide for his groundbreaking contributions to corneal science, including the discovery of the Dua’s Layer in the human cornea.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, during his visit to the Department of Ophthalmology, Dr Dua commended the hospital’s cutting-edge infrastructure, state-of-the-art equipment, immaculate environment, and disciplined yet compassionate work culture.

“The facilities and standards at Army Hospital (R&R) match, and in some aspects even surpass, some of the best centres globally,” he observed.

Prof Dua also delivered a lecture titled “Steering the Ship: From Studentship to Leadership”, exploring the transition from academic pursuit to visionary leadership, enriched by insights from his distinguished career in medicine.

During his visit, Dr Dua was briefed on upcoming projects at AHRR, including the Advanced Centre for Ophthalmic Visual Sciences, the Joint Replacement Centre, and the Oncology Centre.

These visionary initiatives are being implemented under the guidance of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who has been instrumental in modernising the Armed Forces.

The statement further noted that Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi has played a key role in driving these projects forward.

Prof Dua praised the Armed Forces Medical Services, led by DG Armed Forces Medical Services Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, describing it as a unique model of excellence founded on integrity, service, innovation, and clinical expertise.

A beacon of clinical excellence, academic mentorship, and surgical innovation for decades, Dr Dua has transformed the field of modern ophthalmology and continues to inspire generations of clinicians and researchers worldwide.

He was felicitated by Lt Gen Shankar Narayan, Commandant of Army Hospital (R&R), during his visit.
