Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has disapproved what he called an erroneous depiction of Jaisalmer as part of the erstwhile Maratha empire in the recently brought out NCERT Class VIII history book.
In brief chat with the media here on Wednesday evening, Gehlot said historic facts and descriptions about our glorious past should never be distorted as this can lead to serious repercussions. “Such potential errors can mislead our entire younger generation about the history and the legacy”, the ex-CM added.

Scions of royal families of the erstwhile princely state of Jaisalmer, Maharawal Chaitanya Raj Singh Bhati, and Bundi, Brigadier (Retired) Bhupesh Singh Hada, have also raised serious objection over the mistake.
Besides other errors, page 71(unit-3) of Class 8 book depicts (in the map) Jaisalmer as part of the erstwhile Maratha empire.
The royals have asserted that this is not about carrying a mere correction what erroneously depicted in the book is utterly misleading and objectionable.
This tarnishes the glory and reputation of sovereignty, bravery and sacrifices of our ancestors. The fact is that Marathas never had a role, say or interference – intervention in the erstwhile Jaisalmer (princely) state.
The royals sought immediate intervention of Union HRD Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in carrying due correction.
