Tributes poured in on Monday for Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder and former chief minister Shibhu Soren, who passed away in Delhi after a prolonged illness.

Foundly known as “Dishom Guru”, Soren breathed his last at 8.56 am at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, where he had been on the life support system for the past one month.

His death marks the end of an era in Jharkhand’s politics, with leaders from across the party lines remembering his fight for tribal rights and contribution to Jharkhand’s development.

President Droupadi Murmu termed Soren’s demise “a big loss in the space of social justice”. “He championed the cause of tribal identity and formation of the state of Jharkhand,” the President said, noting his contribution as Jharkhand CM and Union Minister.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Shibu Soren was a “grassroots leader” who rose through the ranks of public life with unwavering dedication to the people. “He was particularly passionate about empowering tribal communities, the poor and downtrodden,” Modi said.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that he was saddened by the demise of Soren. Kharge highlighted his struggle for
“separate Jharkhand state and the rights of its people over water, forest, and land, as well as the preservation of tribal culture.”

West Bengal CM and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee said she was “Profoundly saddened by the demise of Shibu Soren, former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, a former Union Minister, founder of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, and Guru Dishom (great leader) for my Adivasi brothers and sisters.”

CPI leader D Raja expressed his party’s condolences, calling Soren “a champion of tribal rights and social justice” who played a key role in shaping the identity of Jharkhand and giving voice to its marginalised people.

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav said that Shibu Soren was “a powerful voice for the marginalized”.

Following Soren’s death, the Jharkhand government has announced official mourning and is expected to hold a state funeral with full honours.
