Addressing the 45th convocation of the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) in Dhanbad on Friday, President Droupadi Murmu urged students to utilise their education for the public good, emphasised the importance of sustainable development and inclusive growth, and highlighted the evolving role of technical institutions in addressing national challenges. Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar also spoke at the event.

Speaking to the graduating students, the President said that education should not remain confined to personal growth but should be used to serve society. She called on the students to contribute to building a just and environmentally balanced India, stating that their future work should reflect intelligence, ethics, and empathy.

The President said IIT (ISM) Dhanbad was established to train professionals in mining and geology, and over time, it evolved into a centre for higher education and research across multiple fields. She noted the institute’s efforts to align education and innovation with the needs of society.

She said the country and the world are facing rapid and complex challenges, including climate change, resource constraints, digital transition, and inequality. She urged institutions like IIT (ISM) to play a leading role in finding sustainable and practical solutions.

The President mentioned the institute’s work through its Centre of Excellence and collaboration with Eklavya Model Residential Schools to support tribal students and women through skill development and entrepreneurship. She said these initiatives support broader goals of inclusive development.

Highlighting India’s aim to become a developed nation by 2047, she said that enhanced access to technical education and digital skills is key to that transformation. She stressed that the education system must be more practical, innovation-oriented and aligned with industry needs. She also emphasised the importance of promoting start-ups, research, a culture of patents, and interdisciplinary learning.

Governor Gangwar said the President has had a long association with Jharkhand, highlighting her work during her tenure as Governor in areas such as education, health, and social welfare.

Referring to her personal journey, the Governor said that the President’s background and her path to higher education offer an example to young people across the country.

He said IIT (ISM), founded in 1926, has contributed to national progress in fields such as mining, energy, and innovation. He encouraged students to apply their knowledge for public benefit and national development, and said institutions like IIT (ISM) have a role in Jharkhand’s sustainable growth.

The President congratulated the students on receiving degrees and medals.
