Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee President Ajay Rai on Thursday sharply criticised US President Donald Trump’s decision to levy a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, claiming it is a direct fallout of ”Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s close ties with Trump”.
Sharing his thoughts on social media, Rai stated, ”Trump has slammed a 25 per cent tariff on India, along with a penalty. The country is bearing the cost of Narendra Modi’s ‘friendship’.”

Taking aim at the BJP-led central government, he alleged that PM Modi had actively endorsed Trump, frequently embracing him and posting their pictures online to generate social media buzz.
“In the end, Trump went ahead and imposed tariffs on India. India’s foreign policy has completely failed,” Rai added.
The tariff announcement came on Wednesday, with President Trump explaining that although the United States and India are friendly nations, their trade volume has remained relatively low.
Trump also declared that India would now be part of the list of nations subject to US tariffs starting August 1, a move expected to adversely affect India’s trade sector.
