Yoga guru Baba Ramdev has shared a home remedy he believes can help manage epilepsy (mirgi), a condition that causes sudden seizures due to unusual brain activity.

In a video, he explained how natural herbs and simple yoga practices can support those who suffer from these attacks. At the same time, he warned people not to believe in the old myths still followed during an epilepsy episode.

According to Ramdev, many people still try strange and unsafe methods when someone gets a seizure in public. Some try to put a spoon or even their fingers into the person’s mouth, while others make them smell a sock or shoe.

These are not only unhelpful but can also be dangerous, he said.

Ramdev suggested that instead of using such tricks, people should turn to traditional Ayurvedic ingredients. He mentioned that boiling and drinking a decoction (kaadha) made from the roots of the peepal and banyan tree can help. He also recommended using mulethi (licorice root), ashwagandha, and pure desi ghee from cows.

In emergency cases, onion juice can be poured in the patient’s mouth to bring relief, he added.

Apart from herbs, Ramdev strongly advised including yoga in daily life for epilepsy patients. He said specific poses like ‘matsyasana’ (fish pose), ‘balasana’ (child pose), ‘shirshasana’ (headstand), and ‘tadasana’ (mountain pose) can calm the nervous system and reduce the chances of seizures over time.

Experts say epilepsy can happen due to various reasons. The most common is genetic, but it can also result from brain strokes, tumors, injuries to the head, or a weak nervous system. Some people also get seizures due to depression or brain infections caused by parasites.

Ramdev also pointed out that during a seizure, the right thing to do is to stay calm and keep the patient safe from getting hurt. Many people panic and try to hold the person tightly or force medicine or water into their mouth, which is extremely risky.

In some cases, these actions can even lead to death.

The best thing, he said, is to let the seizure pass while ensuring the person is lying safely on their side with their head protected. After the episode ends, they should go to a doctor for further care.
