West Bengal’s Leader of Opposition in Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday accused chief minister Mamata Banerjee of spreading fake news regarding the alleged harassment of a Bengali migrant family in Delhi, urging authorities to initiate action against her under cyber laws.

The controversy erupted after a video on social media claimed that a migrant couple from West Bengal’s Malda district and their infant child were harassed by Delhi Police in the Geeta Colony area. The video, she said, showed the mother being detained on suspicion of being a Bangladeshi national, during which the child was injured. Miss Banerjee further alleged that Delhi Police demanded a bribe of Rs 25,000 from the family. The chief minister also claimed the family faced renewed harassment after she publicised the issue, saying police again detained the mother, father, grandmother, and children.

The family later filed a formal complaint at Chanchal police station in Malda district. The incident had prompted Miss Banerjee to lead a protest rally in Birbhum on 28 July, denouncing attacks on Bengalis in BJP-ruled states. However, Delhi Police dismissed the video as “fabricated and scripted,” alleging that it was produced at the behest of a political worker related to the family. Police officials stated that the woman involved admitted during interrogation that the entire video was staged with the intention to malign law enforcement. Using Delhi Police’s statement as a political weapon, Suvendu Adhikari launched a scathing attack on Banerjee.

“The chief minister is a master of spreading rumours. She is eligible for an international award in fake news,” Adhikari said, adding: “She has been consistently posting misleading videos, and now the public knows the truth — Mamata is a liar.” Calling the video “baseless,” Adhikari demanded legal action against Banerjee under cyber laws, accusing her of deliberately misleading the public for political gain. The matter has reignited political tensions between the Trinamul Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, with both sides accusing each other of using migrant distress as a tool for political mileage.
