A 29-year-old habitual thief and his accomplice, who stole gold biscuits worth several lakhs from a metro commuter, have been arrested by the Delhi Police.
The main accused, Sonu Chand, was arrested on Wednesday. Police also recovered over Rs 3 lakh in cash from his possession, a senior officer said.

During interrogation, Chand confessed that two other accomplices were involved in the theft, and one of them has also been arrested.
According to the officer, the arrest has exposed a wider nexus of individuals connected to the gold trade.
“A complaint was registered at Raja Garden police station on July 11 regarding the theft of gold biscuits from metro commuter Amit Santra,” the officer stated.
Santra reportedly told police that he was carrying gold biscuits weighing 141.670 grams, which were stolen from his bag while he was travelling on a metro train between Bahadurgarh and Shadipur Metro Station.
Based on this complaint, a police team, along with the special staff, initiated an investigation.
As part of the preliminary inquiry, police analysed technical evidence. Using multiple clues, they identified and arrested the main suspect, who was found to be a repeat offender.
“We examined CCTV footage from several metro stations and train coaches. Based on the footage, we identified the suspect,” the officer said.
“Chand was tracked over the next few days and finally arrested from his residence in Delhi on Wednesday,” the officer added.
During interrogation, Chand revealed the involvement of two others, Jai Prakash Tiwari and Sumit Shinde, who reportedly run a gold and silver refinery in Bidhanpura, Karol Bagh, New Delhi.
Police said Chand and Shinde have been arrested, while Tiwari has been detained.
“Sonu admitted to having committed similar thefts in the past. He confessed to selling the stolen gold biscuits and hiding the proceeds at his residence. Subsequently, the police recovered Rs 3 lakh in cash from him,” the officer said.
It was also revealed that Sonu targeted metro passengers during peak hours, identifying vulnerable commuters and stealing valuables like cash and jewellery from their bags. He would escape at the next station, taking advantage of the crowd and chaos in the coach.
Sonu, a tobacco and paan vendor by profession, is a known criminal and has been involved in six theft cases registered across various police stations in Delhi, the officer added.
