The Delhi Police have arrested a BSF constable who allegedly robbed a jewellery store using a toy gun in broad daylight. The accused was reportedly inspired by crime shows and driven by losses incurred in online gambling, an official said on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old accused, Gaurav Yadav, had joined the Border Security Force (BSF) in 2023 and completed his training in May. He was posted in Punjab’s Fazilka.

“On June 18, a day before the robbery, he took leave and travelled to Delhi, where he planned the heist while waiting to switch trains,” said Prashant Gautam, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara), in a statement.
The robbery took place on June 19 at a jewellery store in Farsh Bazar, where a man entered the store wielding what appeared to be a pistol and made off with four gold bracelets before fleeing on foot.
A case was registered under Section 309(4) (robbery) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Farsh Bazar Police Station, and an investigation was launched.
During the investigation, police conducted technical surveillance, reviewed CCTV footage, call detail records (CDRs), Internet Protocol Detail Record (IPDR) dump data, and raised multiple queries on the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID).
“After sustained efforts and detailed analysis, the accused was identified as a BSF constable posted in Fazilka, Punjab,” the DCP said.
Following this lead, a raid was carried out at his native village in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, where he was apprehended. During sustained interrogation, he confessed to committing the crime.
According to the police, Yadav had developed a gambling addiction, suffered significant financial losses, and conceived the robbery after watching crime shows.
“He purchased a toy pistol from a local shop and used it to carry out the robbery. Afterward, he travelled to Meerut, then Lucknow, and finally returned to his hometown in Shivpuri, where he sold two of the stolen bracelets and deposited Rs 2 lakh into a bank account,” the DCP added.
During the investigation, police recovered two gold bracelets from his residence and traced the bank account where the Rs 2 lakh was deposited. Gaurav Yadav had no prior criminal record, the police stated, adding that further investigation is underway.
