Billy Joel, often called the “Piano Man” after his famous 1973 hit, has had a long and celebrated career. His songs have touched generations, and he remains one of the world’s best-selling artists. But earlier this year, health concerns forced him to step back from performing.

In February 2025, during what turned out to be his last live show so far, Joel fell on his back after tossing a microphone stand into the crowd.

That moment raised alarms about his condition.

By May, he officially postponed his tour. His doctors said that the performances had worsened his symptoms and advised him to take time off to focus on recovery.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus is a condition that affects people mostly over the age of 60. According to medical experts, it causes fluid to build up in the brain. This extra fluid can lead to problems with walking, balance, hearing, and even memory.

Joel’s team shared a statement at the time of his diagnosis, saying he had started “specific physical therapy” and was putting his health first. His wife, Alexis Joel, also posted on social media, thanking the doctors for their quick diagnosis.

Billy Joel’s music career has spanned over five decades. He has given iconic hits like “Uptown Girl,” “Just the Way You Are,” and “New York State of Mind.”
