The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Centre, all States, and the Law Commission of India on a PIL seeking mandatory disclosure of product quality, purity, certification, and complete identification details of distributors, sellers, and shop owners.

A Bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued the notice on a petition by BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, seeking direction to the governments to ensure that every shop or distributor prominently displays — at the entrance of establishment — their registration details, name, address, phone number, and number of employees on a visible board in bold letters.

The plea stressed that consumers must be informed about the source, quality, and certification of goods and services in order to make informed decisions and seek timely redressal in case of grievances.

“When a distributor, dealer, trader, seller, and shop owner are transparent about their details, it fosters a fair and competitive market where consumers can make informed choices,” says the petition.

It also highlighted that a lack of such information impedes consumer access to justice, as it complicates the process of filing complaints before consumer forums.
