Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann joined thousands of people from all walks of life in bidding a tearful farewell to world-renowned marathoner Fauja Singh, who was cremated at his native village Beas with full state honours on Sunday.
The Chief Minister, who laid a wreath on Fauja Singh’s body, expressed profound grief and sorrow over the tragic demise of the international marathoner. Fauja Singh passed away on July 14 after being hit by a speeding vehicle while crossing a road in his village.

Bhagwant Singh Mann lauded the outstanding contribution of the deceased to the field of sports, adding that his hard work, dedication, and perseverance will continue to inspire future generations.
He said 114-year-old Fauja Singh, the world’s oldest marathon runner, had become a global symbol of endurance and healthy ageing through his unwavering commitment and discipline.
The Chief Minister said the sports fraternity would forever remain indebted to the late Fauja Singh for his immense contribution to elevating athletics to new heights on the international stage, defying age and expectations.
He added that Fauja Singh’s death has shocked the entire world, as he was a global ambassador of commitment and resilience. Through his long-distance runs, the legendary athlete brought immense pride to Punjab and the Sikh community worldwide.
Mann said that Fauja Singh Ji will forever live in the hearts and memories of sports lovers and will continue to inspire people to lead a healthy lifestyle. He asserted that the void left by this legendary figure is difficult to fill.
Recognising his unparalleled contribution, the Chief Minister announced that the state government would rename the village school in Fauja Singh’s honour and install his statue at the village stadium and at the Sports College in Jalandhar.
Expressing his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, Bhagwant Singh Mann prayed to the Almighty to grant them strength to bear this profound loss and to bless the departed soul with eternal peace.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Cabinet Minister Mohinder Bhagat and other dignitaries.
