Odisha varsity professor held for sexual assault of student

With outrage over the Balasore college student suicide following sexual harassment by a teacher showing no signs of subsiding, a similar scandal has resurfaced at the prestigious Gangadhar Meher University in Odisha’s Sambalpur district with police arresting the assistant professor of the varsity.

The accused- Gopikanta Suna, assistant professor of education department- allegedly developed intimacy with a female undergraduate integrated B.Ed student of varsity and sexually exploited her on the promise of marriage, police said.

Later the accused backtracked from the promise and broke the relation.

Deeply upset over rejection, the victim female student lodged an First Information Report (FIR) with police yesterday. Police swung into action instantly and placed the teacher under arrest under relevant sections of BNS. He was later sent to jail after a local Court rejected his bail application, said a senior police official, refusing to divulge further details of the case.
