Kharge, Rahul Gandhi meet Congress’ Assam leaders: Discuss Future Strategy, Strengthening the Organisation

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, visited Assam for a day-long trip aimed at reinforcing the party’s structure ahead of the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections.

The leaders held a closed-door meeting with Assam Congress functionaries, including Gaurav Gogoi, the party’s state president, MPs, MLAs, and other key members of the party.

The discussions revolved around strengthening the party organisation and formulating strategies for the upcoming elections. Gaurav Gogoi emphasised the importance of these talks, sharing on social media that the session also included the Political Affairs Committee, office bearers, DCC presidents, and heads of various party fronts. Alongside the organisational discussions, Kharge and Gandhi also met with members from tribal communities and those experiencing threats, displacement, and other forms of harassment, emphasising their support for vulnerable groups in the state.

The leaders were warmly received at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport with the traditional Assamese ‘gamosas.’

This visit marked the first time Kharge and Gandhi interacted with the state’s party leadership since Gogoi’s appointment as the state president. Later in the afternoon, they were scheduled to meet party functionaries in Chaygaon, about 40 kilometres from Guwahati.

Their visit underscores the Congress party’s renewed efforts to address challenges ahead and strengthen its base in Assam ahead of the assembly elections next year.
