From being a gym instructor to playing a key role in the miraculous performance of the BJP in Tripura, chief of the party’s state unit, Biplab Kumar Deb is the frontrunner for the post of Chief Minister in the crumbled citadel of the Left.

In a classic Davis versus Goliath battle, Biplab, who has been the president of Tripura’s BJP unit since 2016 took on Manik Sarkar– the man who ruled Tripura for five consecutive terms— and much to the surprise of political pundits, came out victorious.

Born in the Gomoti district of Tripura, Biplab completed his higher education in the state before moving to the national capital for further studies.

After 15 years, Biplab decided to return home and was mentored by RSS stalwart KN Govindacharya and BJP leader Sunil Deodhar.

As per reports, he played a key role in the defections of many Congress leaders to the BJP prior to the 2018 election.

Sources in the party have revealed that Biplab shares a close bond with Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) National President Amit Shah which further makes his case strong as the next state CM is likely to be someone who enjoys the confidence of the party high command.

The final decision on the candidature is likely to be taken in BJP’s Parliamentary Board Meeting scheduled to take place on Saturday evening.

Tripura, which was seen as the fortress of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) for over two decades finally came down like a house of cards as the saffron storm hit the northeastern state.

The BJP and its allies are leading on 42 of the 59 seats while the CPI(M) was ahead on just 17 seats.

In the 2013 Assembly Polls, the CPI(M) had won 49 seats, while the Congress bagged 10 seats and the BJP failed to win even a single seat in the state.
