Alipurduar youth held

Acting on a tip off, forest officials of the Jaldapara Forest Reserve on Thursday arrested one youth, Amit Chhetri, for allegedly killing a deer in the National park and enjoying a feast with its meat.

The accused, who hails from the Beech Line area of the Ramjhora tea plantation, was produced in the Alipurduar court on Friday, which sent him in a three-day custody of forest officials, it is learnt. The officials arrested Mr Chettri from near the Ramjhora tea plantation in the Birpara- Madarihat block in the district, it is learnt.

Sources said that a grand picnic was organised in the Ramjhora tea plantation on Thursday where a barking deer was allegedly killed to have the party. After receiving information about this, forest officials raided the place and arrested Chettri from the spot where they recoverd a kilogram of cooked deer meat.

Forest authorities also produced the cooked meat in the court on Friday, sources said. The Jaldapara National Park authority said it has started investigations on the matter. “After priliminary investigations, we came to know that Amit was not involved in the killing of the deer.

He had brought the meat from somewhere else. We will surely catch hold of the culprits who had killed the animal. We are investigating the matter seriously,” said the DFO of Coochbehar forest division, Kumar Bimal.

Last month, a pregnant bison was killed at the Buxa Tiger Reserve forest for meat where authorities recovered guns and other sharp weapons used to kill animals inside the reserve. In a gap of one month, multiple cases of wildlife murder for meat has raised an alarm for authorities of the forest administartion, it is learnt.
