The West Bengal government on Monday said that it has no plans to scrap the iconic tram services of the city, state Transport Minister Subhendu Adhikary told the assembly.
However, tram services on some loss-making and congested routes might be discontinued, Adhikary said during the passage of The Stage-Carriages (Repealing) Bill, 2017.

The Bill, he said, was as per the Law Commission of India's recommendation and had no relevance in the present times.

Several state assemblies had also done this, he said adding that the repeal has no connection with the horse-driven stage carriages which ply around areas like Babughat, Victoria Memorial and others.
