Berhampur, 3 September
Two cellphones, a charger and two bagful of gutkha and packets of cigarettes were seized during a raid on the Berhampur circle jail, police said today.
Cellphone and chargers were seized yesterday near the ward where Sangram Mohanty, son of Jana Adhikar Manch convener Dandapani Mohanty, and some other UTPs are lodged, said sub-divisional police officer (Berhampur), T P Patra.
Sangram was arrested in December last year in connection with his alleged involvement in Maoist activities. He denied that the cellphones belong to him.
“We will verify SIMs of the mobile phones and calls made from those,” police said. Police raids on the jail assumes significance in the run-up to Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) with BJD MLA (Gopalpur) Pradeep Panigrahi alleging that some candidates received threat calls from the prison and a Congress candidate is contesting from jail.
Panigrahi told this to collector Krishan Kumar and SP (Berhampur) Anirudha Singh during a recent interaction.
