Rural poll: Guv summons Subrata
KOLKATA, 17 JUNE: Governor MK Narayanan today summoned panchayat minister Subrata Mukherjee to Raj Bhavan and reportedly sought to know from him the state government’s latest position on holding the panchayat poll. The meeting was held in the backdrop of a spate of complaints by the Opposition parties about widespread intimidation of their candidates and lack of security arrangements to prevent such incidents.

RBI policy
MUMBAI, 17 JUNE: Calling for a vigilance over global economic uncertainties that may lead to the reversal of capital inflows and add to the current account deficit burden and roil stock market sentiment, the Reserve Bank of India today maintained its cautious credit and monetary policy stance by denying any relaxation in its short-term lending rate ~ or repo rate ~ and cash reserve ratio or CRR (a fixed percentage of banks’ deposits kept with the central bank). These have been retained at 7.25 per cent and four per cent respectively ruling out immediate relief to a retail borrower who will have to pay the same EMI or equated monthly installment on home, auto or consumer goods loans. sns

Trai cuts roaming charges
KOLKATA, 17 JUNE: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India today reduced ceilings on national roaming call and SMS and instituted a new regime for providing flexibility to telecom service providers to customise tariffs for national roamers through STVs and Combo Vouchers. Trai has also mandated two types of free national roaming plans to be provided by service providers. sns (see page 9)
