‘Ama Gaon Haat’, a project conceived to facilitate better marketing of the handicraft products of the Self Help Groups (SHGs) in different blocks in the district, has rekindled hope among the artisans as the district administration reopened the market complex after five years it was closed down.
Collector Ms Roopa Roshan Sahoo reportedly took personal interest in the matter and took several steps for reopening and smooth functioning of the complex after consultation with banks, horticulture department and officials of District Supply and Marketing Society (DSMS) recently. “After selection of the producers’ groups and renovation of the entire market complex, collector Ms Sahoo handed over the ownership letters to the groups belonging to different blocks. She has also assured to facilitate their business expansion,” said a senior district official.
The shops in the complex provide a range of local and indigenous products including food items, dokra products of Sadeibereni village of Sadar block, decorative items and tribal jewellery items of Karmul and Gobardhanpur village which are often exported to European countries. Expressing satisfaction with the district administration&’s initiatives to reopen the complex, president of Dhenkanal Mushroom producers’ federation Mr Ajay Prusty said that the mushroom farmers have got a better platform. The mentor of Mission Producers’ Group, Mr Kishore Chandra Sahoo informed that the efforts aimed at promoting the local products including the food items. Official sources informed that the district administration has sanctioned Rs 2.50 lakh for renovation of the complex. A management committee headed by the project director of DRDA Mr SP Das is looking after its smooth functioning.
“The market is now a major tourist attraction and also attracts the food connoisseurs who get to taste different local food products here. More than 12,000 SHGs of the district will benefit from the reopening of the complex,” said the chief executive of DSMS Mr Nigam Charan Dash.
