Tottenham Hotspur managed to hold defending champions Real Madrid to a creditable 1-1 draw in their UEFA Champions League Group H tie on Tuesday night and Lilywhites striker Harry Kane took to Instagram to declare how chuffed he was with their performance.

Proud of our performance tonight. Big displays all over the pitch. A good point and looking forward to playing them at Wembley. 👍 #COYS #UCL #thfc #ChampionsLeague #Madrid

Spurs, somewhat against the run of play, took the lead in the 28th minute via a Raphael Varane own goal before Cristiano Ronaldo equalised for the hosts three minutes before the interval.

Real were the ascendant side in the second-half as well but were unable to breach Hugo Lloris’ goal again.

Kane would have a chance to score the winner when his strike-partner Fernando Llorente set him up with a smart through-ball but the 24-year-old could not find a way to beat Keylor Navas.

For Spurs, the result was a highly encouraging one as Real have dominated Europe in the past few seasons and few teams can claim to have to forced Los Blancos to share spoils at the Santiago Bernabeu.

After three games played, both Real and Spurs have seven points and after Borussia Dortmund were held to a 1-1 draw with Apoel Nicosia in their other Group H game on the night, the duo are virtually guaranteed of progression to the knockout stages.

Top spot, however, remains up for grabs.

On November 2, the sides meet again at Wembley Stadium and whoever wins the tie in the English capital is likely to top the group.
