Sanjay Kumar Kalirona, Comio India CEO and Director

Comio, a smartphone brand of the biggest original device maker (ODM) Chinese Topwise Communication from China, on Thursday launched two new entry-level 4G VoLTE smartphones– Comio C2 Lite and Comio S1 Lite – targeted towards younger consumers in India at starting Rs. 5,999.

The company made its foray into Indian smartphone market with the launch of Comio S1, P1 and a couple of more phones in August last year, and in just less than 5 months, it claims to sell 1 lakh units of Comio smartphones every month across retail channels.

Speaking to TheStatesman.com, Sanjay Kumar Kalirona, CEO and Director for Comio India said, “Our numbers can tell our success. We are already selling 1 lakh devices every month, so around 3000 devices are getting activated everyday.”

With Comio brand of smartphones, the company plans to invest Rs. 500 crore over the next two years to build its presence in India in order to compete with the likes of Samsung, Xiaomi, Intex and Micromax. The company has over Rs. 150 crore budget for the India R&D.

Kalirona says that Comio is mainly focused on offline and since the launch in August, 2017, Comio has built its market in North-West of India, and plans to expand to East and South over the next quarter.

“If you see our offline strength its quite strong actually. In just 5 months, we have more than 4,400 distributors, Comio is available at 20,000 plus stores, we are covering more than 900 towns as today. Currently we are present in North and West, next quarter we’ll expand to East and South.”

Replying to consumer concerns over the brand sustainability, since we have seen many brands come-and-go in recent times, Kalirona said that “Comio is here to stay” and whatever the company is doing so far is not for the short term but is for long term.

“If you see our background, it is not just that we came in India, we launched online, played on price point, we are not just only price focused, we are trying to give experience to the consumer and trying to reach every nook and corner of the country, that kind of confidence we can give to consumer that we are not overnight operator, we are here to stay, because the kind of investment we are doing, everything we are doing is for long term, nothing is short term.”
