Justice is often portrayed as rigid and detached, but Justice Surya Kant has consistently prove d that fairness and compassion can coexist. As a distinguished judge of the Supreme Court of India, he is admired not only for his knowledge of the law but also for his deep understanding of the people it serves. His humane approach and accessible nature have made him a respected figure across the legal fraternity.
Coming from a modest background, Justice Surya Kant’s rise to the top of the judiciary is a story of perseverance and determination. Despite facing numerous hardships, he remained steadfast in his ambition to serve society through law. He completed his LL.B. from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, where he stood out for his academic excellence and his strong concern for social issues. Over the last three decades, his judicial career has taken him through several important positions, including serving in the Punjab and Haryana High Court and eventually the Supreme Court of India. Throughout his journey, he has worked with a commitment to ensuring that justice is not merely delivered but is visibly fair and transparent. His time at the Punjab and Haryana High Court is particularly noteworthy: he dealt with more than a thousand cases, many of them high-profile ones, with remarkable integrity and efficiency.
He also served as the Chief Justice of the hilly state of Himachal Pradesh before becoming a judge of the Supreme Court of India. During his tenure in Himachal Pradesh, he left a great impression of simplicity and practicality in the state. Deputy Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Mukesh Agnihotri told The Statesman about the impact of Justice Surya Kant on improving and easing the right to justice for the underprivileged sections of society. Among his notable contributions is a landmark judgment safeguarding the rights of marginalized groups. This decision was widely appreciated by legal scholars and human rights advocates and continues to guide similar cases today.
Senior Advocate Ravinder Malik, who travelled to Delhi to attend Justice Surya Kant’s oath ceremony, remarked, “Justice Surya Kant has always supported young lawyers. He is a role model for the next generation, and his dedication inspires all of us.” Likewise, Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat expressed pride, saying, “This is a remarkable moment for Haryana. Justice Surya Kant comes from a simple rural family, and he has shown that perseverance and hard work can overcome any barrier.” Acharya Devvrat told The Statesman that “his success proves that true talent always finds its way.” What truly distinguishes Justice Surya Kant is his heartfelt concern for ordinary citizens.
Known for being approachable, he has consistently worked to make legal remedies accessible to people regardless of their wealth or background. His humanitarian efforts are visible through his association with several initiatives, including his work with the Haryana State Legal Services Authority, where he championed legal aid for those who could not afford it. His passion for the law has influenced countless young students and aspiring advocates, encouraging them to view the judiciary not just as a career but as a path of service to society. His contributions both inside and outside the courtroom have left a lasting imprint on India’s legal landscape.
