Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting coach Mike Hussey has confirmed that young batter Ayush Mhatre sustained a hamstring tear during their match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), adding that the injury “looks pretty bad,” though the full extent is yet to be determined.

“We’ll scan him probably the next day. I’m not sure how bad it is, but yes, it looks pretty bad,” Hussey said after CSK’s 10-run defeat.

Mhatre, who came in as an impact substitute for Gurjapneet Singh in the second over of CSK’s chase of 195, made an immediate impact after the early dismissal of Sanju Samson. The 18-year-old looked in excellent touch, smashing a quick 30 off just 12 balls.

However, trouble struck in the fifth over when he pulled his hamstring while attempting a second run. Although he completed the run, he soon collapsed in pain, requiring immediate attention from the physio. Despite the discomfort, Mhatre briefly continued before eventually losing his wicket a few deliveries later.

“He is an exciting young talent, but unfortunately he’s going to be a big loss. He has been in nice touch for us,” Hussey added.

The injury adds to CSK’s growing concerns, with bowlers Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis already ruled out. Former captain MS Dhoni is also yet to feature in the season as he continues recovery from a calf injury sustained in training.

CSK’s defeat to SRH saw them slip to seventh place in the standings with four points from six matches. They will next face Mumbai Indians on Thursday.
